If you are involved in crafts with children and you want to make something that is very useful that children can actually use then you may want to make bowls with them. Bowls are useful items that kids can bring home.
They can put fruit in it or vegetables or even just use it as a catch all for various junk items around the house. There are really only 2 ways to make bowls with kids. With clay and with paper mache. If you are using clay which is one of the best creative crafts around, then you make as large a ball as you can with the clay to begin the process.
Then you take your thumb and push into the middle of the ball of clay. As you turn around the ball in your hand you keep pushing in. What happens is that a bowl is being formed as you are doing this and you can decide on the thickness of the walls of your ball depending on how hard you push against the clay. When its done it needs a couple of days to dry and you can then paint it or varnish it. The children need to know that is fragile in that if falls on the floor the whole thing will probably break into pieces allover the place.
Even though there are many paper mache ideas that you can do with kids, a bowl is one of the easiest. The way to do that is with using a blown up balloon that is round in shape. The children put strips of paper mache pieces all around the bottom of the bowl. They need to wait until it dries thoroughly and once it is dry they prick the balloon with a sharp utensil. The balloon pops and you are left with a lovely bowl in the right shape. You can then paint it and make all kinds of designs on it.
