How to Catch Scabies?

December 28, 2011.

There are some things that you want to catch, like a fish or a hot date.  But then there are things you don’t want to catch, like scabies.  But in order to know how to avoid getting scabies, you need to learn how it spreads.  Then, you’ll understand how to protect yourself.

Scabies is a microscopic mite.  That means that you can’t see it.  So when you look at someone, you won’t be able to tell whether they are infected or not.  In fact, even pictures of scabies bites are not much help, as there are a number of skin conditions that look similar.  The easiest way to avoid it is to avoid physical contact with a person who is infected, but if you don’t know who is infected, keeping a little separate goes a long way in high risk environments, like daycares and nursing homes.

It also can spread through contaminated surfaces.  This is especially true in clothing and towels that have been used on the skin.  If you do laundry in a high risk environment, then you will want to wear gloves when handling these things.  Sulfur powder also repels the mite, so you can sprinkle your clothing with sulfur to help keep it away.  However, this method isn’t fool proof, as it is possible to miss a spot.

Scabies and children also seem to go well together.  The mite is very easy to pick up in crowded daycare centers.  To avoid it, make sure to shower and change clothes after work.  If you start seeing any signs of scabies, like severe itchiness or a bumpy red rash, see a doctor right away.  He will examine your skin  and make a diagnosis.  A prescription cream can get rid of the mite in about a week, although it takes longer for symptoms to abate.
